the owners

My name is Liz Sugar . My husband Charles and I are the owners of Evergreen Sporthorses, which is a part of our partnership – “C&E Sugar Evergreen Partnership” which has a number of roles including cattle breeding and horse massage.

I have always had an interest in horses. Whilst living in Sydney, on five acres, I had a number of horses over the years, originally involved in showing and then breeding a small number of Purebred Arabians. This progressed to riding and training some Arabians for dressage with some great successes. Breeding a small number of Arabian Warmbloods has led to a passion for beautiful sport horses and of dressage.

Time was a limiting factor whilst working full time as a nurse and hospital manager, so the horses were a hobby. A decision to leave our jobs in pursuit of a more stress free lifestyle and a move to 50 acres, opened up possibilities of a more serious breeding plan.

The original intention was to buy some high quality brood mares and a search ensued which resulted in the purchase of “Talquah Scarlett” and “Snowview Mistique”. The trip to buy these mares resulted in a meeting with “Snowview Jamieson” – a Holsteiner stallion with all the qualities we required for our breeding plans. “Jamieson” was bred and owned by Norm Raphael – owner of Snowview Holsteiners, a very influential breeder of Holsteiner horses in Australia. I viewed “Jamieson” with the intention of having “Mistique” served before she was transported to NSW.

“Jamieson” was the epitome of that horse that you see in your mind. On returning to Sydney – I managed to persuade Charles that the purchase of this stallion would benefit us in our plans even though I had never intended or wanted to own a stallion, nor thought that I could manage one. Of course, he was not even for sale. Some fast-talking persuaded Norm to let go of this lovely horse and he arrived about a month after our move to Kiama. He has fulfilled all of my expectations – being easy to live with and handle and is the core of our small stud. I handle him myself whilst serving and he is easily managed. The arrival of his beautiful son “Evergreen Jethro” (Oct 2004) has confirmed our choice.

I now work on the stud, managing the horses and cattle, coaching a small number of dressage riders and regularly judging at dressage competitions. Our new life is busier than a “full time” job ever was.

Charles, who enjoyed a successful business career as chief executive of several medium to large businesses, manages the books and finances for the stud. His extensive background in business and accounting complement my horse management skills, although he has a full time job trying to keep me within budget.
