the stud & facilities
Evergreen
is located on the New South Wales South Coast, 5 minutes from Kiama,
35 minutes from Wollongong. We are less than 2 hours from Sydney
Airport and easily accessible from the Southern Highlands, Canberra
and the South Coast.
The farm is 50 acres of lush green dairy country in the rolling
hills behind Kiama. We have stunning views of the sea and the escarpment.
The stallion has the best views from his stable window and we hope
he gets some pleasure from it (does a horse look at the view? –
he loves to stand on the highest hill and scan the countryside –
whether he is looking for mares, greener pastures or the view, he
seems happy).
The paddocks are fenced with horse and cattle safe fencing with
a number of large yards and shelters for night and huge pasture
improved paddocks for day. Our own horses are paddocked in groups,
visiting broodmares are paddocked alone but next to others unless
the owner requests paddocking with other horses. Our own horses
share paddocks with the cattle from time to time.
We have a purpose built stable complex, comprised of stables, a
tack room, a work room, a feed room, and an indoor washbay and breezeway
where riding horses are prepared or the vet or farrier can work
out of the weather.
The
property has laneways between the paddocks so we can access all
parts of the property without having to cross the paddocks. They
are also excellent for riding the horses off the arena offering
a nice alternative to flat work and providing some hill work for
strengthening. The stallion is always paddocked just across a laneway
from the mares.
There is a 30m x 60m fenced dressage arena used for flatwork, lunging
and led work or work over poles. There is a viewing box in the judge’s
position at C, which provides clients with a comfortable area out
of the weather to view horses in hand, or at liberty.
Pasture is currently Kikuyu, rye and white clover and has been pasture
improved. There is plenty of feed, however horses always receive
at least a small night feed to ensure the adequate provision of
minerals and vitamins. Night yards are large enough that there is
continual pick available so horses are not spending hours with nothing
in their gut. Water is provided from 3 dams and collected rainwater.
Horses
are rotated through the property to have access to different types
of terrain. There are a number of fairly flat long paddocks and
some with slopes. Youngsters get to spend a fair amount of time
in a large paddock of about 8 acres, which has very steep hills
and gullies. They learn to move on this terrain, strengthening muscle,
bone and ligaments and learning to use their quarters naturally
ensuring a stronger and more balanced youngster when ready to be
educated under saddle.
